Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica (MBU) was established on 1 July 1992 by the Slovak National Council Act No.139/1992 Coll. as of 27 February 1992 by merging the University of Economics and Tourism in Banská Bystrica and the Faculty of Education in Banská Bystrica. At present, MBU consists of 7 faculties – four faculties were established in 1992 - Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Natural Sciences, two faculties - Faculty of Political Science and International Relations and Faculty of Law were established in 1995; and one faculty - Faculty of Physical Education, Sports and Health has been established in 2024.
Following the centuries-old traditions of universities in Europe, today MBU proudly proclaims the legacy of Matej Bel based on the principles of social tolerance and interdisciplinary approach in scientific research.
Matej Bel (1684 - 1749) was the author of many scientific, pedagogical, geographical, philosophical and ecclesiastical-religious works. His lasting legacy is the postulate of national equality, religious tolerance, the unification of people and nations, love of country and belief in the power of education and culture. His work contributed to the development of science, education and culture in Slovakia and in Europe. The University focuses on the fields of humanities, as well as social and natural sciences. It is an institution with a strong regional influence, and a well-established position in the national and international contexts.
