    The Pure Slovak Experience!

    The Pure Slovak Experience!

They say that learning a new language also means immersing yourself in its culture. Any polyglot, linguist, or language enthusiast would agree. Fortunately, language learning goes far beyond textbooks and memorizing vocabulary. The best way to truly understand a language—and its culture—is to experience it firsthand.

At the Institute of Language and Academic Preparation (IJOP), we bring Slovak to life through hands-on experiences. Our approach not only helps students grasp the language and culture but also fosters meaningful connections that often turn into lasting friendships.

In early February, IJOP students had the unique opportunity to dive into Slovak traditions through a folklore dance workshop led by the university ensemble MLADOSŤ. The lecturers introduced a diverse selection of dances from across Slovakia, from the lively rhythms of Gemer to the charm of Záhorie. What began with uncertainty and a few nervous steps soon turned into a celebration of movement, smiles, and joy. The students then showcased their newfound skills at a special event on February 25, 2025, bringing Slovak culture to life in a way they’ll never forget.

The event kicked off with a captivating performance by the folklore ensemble, setting the stage for our students to take their turn. How did they feel afterward? The feedback was overwhelmingly positive! But don’t just take our word for it—ask them yourself. They’d be delighted to share their experience and chat about their journey into Slovak culture.

When people think of Slovak culture, traditional dishes like bryndzové halušky and žinčica often come to mind. While these are undoubtedly Slovak staples, there’s another national passion that can’t be overlooked—hockey. To give our students a true taste of this beloved sport, they visited the Banská Bystrica’s hockey arena to watch the UMB Hockey Team in action.

Before the game, our lecturers introduced them to the basics of hockey during Slovak lessons, ensuring they understood the rules and could fully enjoy the experience. The energy in the arena was infectious, and our students quickly joined the home fans in cheering for the team. Who knows? Their newfound enthusiasm for hockey might even carry over to the World Championship in May!

We’re thrilled to offer experiences like this, making our students’ time with us not just educational, but truly unforgettable.
