Slovak is no longer the most difficult language
As we step into the new year, memories of September still feel fresh. For many of our international students, it marked the beginning of a brave new chapter—entering a different environment, adapting to a new culture, and, perhaps most dauntingly, learning Slovak. With its intricate grammar, countless prefixes and suffixes, and unpredictable exceptions, Slovak initially seemed like an insurmountable challenge.
However, what once felt overwhelming has now become an inspiring success story. Over the first five months, students diligently studied Slovak at A1 and A2 levels. While there were moments of confusion and the occasional “Why is this so complicated?”—their perseverance paid off. In late January, students sat for the A2 language exam and delivered outstanding results. Their performance demonstrated not only a strong grasp of grammar but also impressive improvement in both receptive and productive language skills. Most notably, their confidence in communication has flourished—they are now able to engage in everyday conversations with ease and growing fluency.
This remarkable progress is due in no small part to the dynamic support from our university community. Alongside formal lessons, students participated in a range of engaging activities designed to enhance their language learning through real-world experiences.
Before the holidays, they enjoyed the festive spirit at the Faculty of Education’s Christmas markets, sampling traditional Christmas cabbage soup and punch while getting to know fellow students and staff. The season’s joy continued with a visit from St. Nicholas, who delighted students with sweet treats—a cherished Slovak tradition.
The festive atmosphere extended to SNP Square, where students reflected on their first semester amidst the magic of Christmas lights. Later, a spirited bowling night brought laughter and friendly competition, with a few students surprising everyone with their natural talent for the game.
On the final day before the holiday break, our teaching team hosted a special event featuring interactive activities centered on Slovak Christmas traditions. Students even learned and performed the classic carol “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” capping off the day with thoughtful gifts and warm holiday wishes.
With the new semester underway, students have now begun specialized courses aimed at expanding their vocabulary in academic and subject-specific contexts. This new knowledge will be essential as they prepare for entrance exams and continue their studies at Slovak universities.
We are incredibly proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing all the
