International Migration and Migration Policy

As migration represents one of the main global problems nowadays, this course will offer to the students the analysis of migration of such; will provide them with the answers what causes migration, where the main migration flows are around the world and particularly in the EU. Finally the course will provide the students with the framework developed in EU countries and also the national level, as well as developed countries to tackle migration and also possibilities how to prevent it.

Course content:

  1. Terminology, theories of migration, interdisciplinary character of migration
  2. History of migration flows, and current migration global trends
  3. Types of migrations and migrants
  4. Rights of migrants
  5. Migration policy, migration policy of the European Union, migration policy of the Slovak Republic
  6. Migration and development

Learning objectives:

The student:

  • remembers definitions and understands interrelations,
  • is able to analyze specific situations in the frame of international relations by applying acquired knowledge, and to draw conclusions,
  • is able to evaluate the activity of actors, and to propose alternative solutions of analyzed problems,
  • is able to create a presentation / case study to a given topic, by using competences referred to in points 1 – 3.
