    UMB on the way to HRS4R award renewal

    In 2018, the University of Matej Bel in Banská Bystrica (UMB) reached a significant milestone when it was the first Slovak university to receive the prestigious "HR Excellence in Research" (HRS4R) award. This award recognises the University's commitment to creating excellent working conditions for researchers, promotes transparency in recruitment processes, and improves the working environment and career prospects for researchers. Currently, in 2024, UMB is in the award renewal phase.

    One of the key steps in the HRS4R award renewal phase process is to create a self-assessment report. This report was successfully completed and sent to the European Commission on 18 April 2024. The self-assessment report presents a detailed analysis of the University's progress in implementing the principles of the European Charter for Researchers (Annex II) and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers, including a thorough internal evaluation. The report provides:

    • progress review - an assessment of how the University has met the objectives and commitments set out in the implementation phase;
    • identifying strengths and areas for improvement - analysing what has been achieved and which areas need further effort;
    • Action plan for the next period, i.e. for the years 2024 - 2026 - a plan of concrete steps and measures that the university plans to implement to improve working conditions and support the career growth of researchers.

    The next step in the HRS4R award renewal phase process is visit of external experts. These experts will come to the university to conduct an external evaluation and verify the veracity and quality of the information provided in the self-assessment report. During the visit, they will conduct interviews with researchers and university management, aiming to get realistic and independent perspectives on the implementation of the HRS4R principles at UMB. They will also assess the working environment and evaluate how UMB creates favourable conditions for researchers, including work-life balance, career opportunities and transparency in recruitment processes. Also, analyse documentation and verify records and evidence of the implementation of the action plan and other actions outlined in the self-assessment report.

    Why is this important?

    The renewal of the HRS4R award would be a reaffirmation of UMB's commitment to creating more transparent and fairer recruitment and evaluation procedures, including making academic and research careers more attractive. The benefits of obtaining this award are multifaceted:

    • prestige and international recognition: the MBU will be among the leading European institutions committed to raising the standard of working conditions for researchers;
    • increased attractiveness for researchers: the University will be more attractive to talented researchers from all over the world who are looking for an institution that supports their professional development;
    • increased chances of winning grants: institutions with the HRS4R award are in a better position to apply for European and other international research grants;
    • a better working environment: systematic improvements in HR policy will contribute to the satisfaction and productivity of researchers.

    UMB continues its journey to maintain and improve the high standards set by the HRS4R award. The submission of the self-assessment report and the upcoming visit of external experts are key steps in this process. Researchers at UMB can contribute to this effort and ensure that the University continues to be a leader in providing excellent conditions for research work. Together, we can contribute to ensuring that UMB continues to be a place where researchers feel supported, valued, and motivated to achieve exceptional results.
