The first Slovak University to be awarded the “HR Excellence in Research” quality mark

Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica became the 1st Slovak University and the 429th Institution in the European Union awarded the “HR Excellence in Research” quality mark on the 5th of December 2018. This quality mark is awarded by the European Commission to those institutions which committed themselves to implement and sustain 40 principles of the "European Charter of Researchers and Code of Conduct for Recruitment of Researchers" as part of the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R). This commitment involves incorporating the principles of the Charter and the Code into institutional policies and the human resources management strategies with the aim to promote the organization as a workplace that provides attractive career and quality working conditions to its creative workforce. The European Commission conditions the award of this quality mark with the possibility to ask for the funding under European financial programs (in particular Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe).

Signing up for the HRS4R strategy is voluntary and it is a sign of a transparency as it enables both the European Commission and the public to follow up the steps that the institution with the “HR Excellence in Research” quality mark is doing in a time sequence of two years, and later every four years. Matej Bel University started to work on the HRS4R strategy in January 2017. All parts of the university participated in this process. Each faculty prepared the so-called Gap Analysis - i.e. the analysis of the strengths and weaknesses in the field of human resources management and consequently the UMB management developed the 2-year Action Plan which the University commits to fulfil (e.g. advertising of all available English-language positions on EURAXESS; preparation of open access / open science regulations; the ethics of research - responsible science and research; or gender action plans).

By entering HRS4R in November 2017, Matej Bel University has clearly declared its determination to join European universities that rely on the principles of support for their creative employees, as well as the principles of ethical approach in all university strategies and processes.
