Cooperation between UMB and the Idaho Museum of International Diaspora in the EMERGE alliance

Cooperation between UMB and the Idaho Museum of International Diaspora in the EMERGE alliance

From September 30, 2025, to October 1, 2025, UMB welcomed Palina Louangketh, director of the Idaho Museum of International Diaspora (Boise, USA) for a short-term research stay. Dr. Palina Louangketh, who also works as a teacher and researcher at Boise State University in Idaho, USA, carried out her research stay at UMB as part of the Fulbright Program with Fulbright Specialist status.

Cooperation with the institutions represented by Palina Louangketh began at the Department of English and American Studies at the Faculty of Arts of UMB, with the first steps taken thanks to Anna Slatinská. Together, they initiated and implemented new activities in the field of diaspora research. This research builds on one of UMB's important research directions in the humanities and social sciences, namely research into culture and language, urban ethnography, and intercultural interactions. The joint research led to a series of international conferences (Washington 2022, Banská Bystrica 2023, Galway 2024), the publication of a series of scientific papers, but above all to the convergence of institutional cultures and the mutual exchange of experiences. In 2024, the Idaho Museum of International Diaspora also became a global partner of the EMERGE alliance.

In early October, Palina Louangketh led very useful workshops on selected aspects of strategic management. The aim of her work was to help better set the groundwork for the UMB's third mission policy, which the university will be preparing in the near future. The cooperation between UMB and IMID is an example of good practice and the connection between a purely academic program and the life of local and regional communities. We believe that we will continue this successful cooperation in the future.
