13th Year of the University Night of Literature in New Dimensions

Education and art know no boundaries

The thirteenth edition of the well‑known cultural event in Banská Bystrica will take place on 14 April 2026 – and in completely new dimensions.

We are joining forces with the Jozef Gregor Tajovský Grammar School in Banská Bystrica and with the EMERGE Alliance  universities, which we are part of. And we are also returning to the Faculty of Arts of UMB.

After three years of wandering across other faculties, UNL will once again return for a moment to its home Faculty of Arts and will offer five reading sites on the campus at Tajovského Street 40. Two additional sites will allow visitors to explore the premises of the neighbouring Jozef Gregor Tajovský Grammar School at Tajovského Street 25, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

And those who might be in Limerick (Ireland), Coruña (Spain), Rennes and Vannes (France), Flensburg (Germany), Hamar (Norway), Paphos (Cyprus), Alexandroupoli (Greece), Kremenchuk (Ukraine) or Tbilisi (Georgia) on that day have no reason to worry or feel left out - because at 5:00 p.m. on 14 April 2026, the University Night of Literature will begin there as well, streamed through the Emerge European University Alliance YouTube channel.

We Are Connected by a Vision

The UNL team and its partner institutions see school as a place of self‑realization, a place to develop abilities and acquire knowledge, a place that allows people to grow - and also a place that is not indifferent to its surroundings. We share the vision that through this approach we contribute to a better future: more responsible, more resilient, wiser, and more cultured.

UNL also connects people - those interested in good literature and in the atmosphere of meetings. This year’s organizing team has once again selected six recent books translated from English, German, French, Italian and Ukrainian, published by small independent publishers, along with one original Slovak title which has rightfully earned fifty editions. From these seven excerpts, a cocktail should emerge - one with the flavor of childlike playfulness, historical gravity, and artistic immortality. Come and taste it!

We Invite You to the Faculty of Arts UMB, the Faculty of Natural Sciences UMB, and the Jozef Gregor Tajovský Grammar School

On Tuesday, 14 April 2026, we will be waiting for you at the UMB Faculty of Arts campus on Tajovského Street 40, and also at the Jozef Gregor Tajovský Grammar School on Tajovského Street 25. The first readings at all sites begin at 5:00 p.m. - come a few minutes earlier to pick up your literary passport with a map and move to your first reading station. It does not matter which route you choose among the seven readings; you may start anywhere. What matters is that each reading lasts 15 minutes, followed by a 15‑minute break for moving to the next location. A children’s corner, a book‑filled sales stand, and a raffle for those who complete all readings will also be available. You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or on the University Night of Literature website.

And whose voices will you hear on 14 April from 5:00 p.m.?

Of course, we will reveal that later, but the UNL team once again promises an exceptional seven.
Today we can tell you that this year’s lineup is connected with education, culture, volunteering, activism, regional development, the past, and the future.
