Research of Slovak folk dances from Banát, Báčka and Sriem in the archives in Slovakia

A methodological DVD by PhDr. Stanislav Dúžek, CSc. and PhDr. Zuzana Drugová was issued in 2013 by the Memorial Centre of Dr. Janko Bulík in Kovačica, Serbia. The DVD was made thanks to the financial support of Slovaks living abroad, as they supported the implementation of the research in archives in Slovakia and the digitalisation of the acquired materials in 2012. In 2013, the ÚSŽZ (Office for Slovaks Living Abroad) supported the project to release a DVD in 2014 for teachers training with the aim of presenting the results of research and its possible usage in the current activities of folkloric ensembles in the Lowlands. The research resulted in the identification of all archival records in Slovakia, in the digitalisation of the records and in the expert analysis of individual records by an ethnoarcheologist Mgr. Stanislav Dúžek, PhD. In 2014, we presented the DVD during the training for folkloric ensembles in Kovačica.

Meeting of the natives – natives of Banská Bystrica

Due to the initiative of Dušan Klimo, a native of Banská Bystrica, the MBU Methodological Centre was a co-organizer of the first ever meeting of natives during the days of the city and the Fair in Radvaň. The meeting was attended by 20 natives of Banská Bystrica. The activities of the meeting were prepared in cooperation with the City of Banská Bystrica and the Regional Organisation of Tourism.

All of the participants in the meeting appreciated the high professional and organizational level of the natives meeting. They also appreciated the way they were received by the Mayor of Banská Bystrica on the occasion of the festive lunch. The natives understood their participation in the ceremonial meeting as a means of demonstrating that the former inhabitants of Banská Bystrica, many of whom now hold important positions in their countries, are still part of the city and their hometown fully expresses it.

Scientific excursions in the areas of Banská Bystrica, Hronsek, Špania dolina and in Selce were attended by a number of participants who repeatedly appreciated the organization management of the whole event and its accompanying excursions. At the end of 2014, the Mayor of Banská Bystrica announced to the organisers that the meeting of natives was involved in the annual City Day activities supervised by the city. The MBU Methodological Centre is already preparing its 2nd year.

Summer school of folk dance

When the fifth year of the Summer school folk dance with the participation of 111 participants from six countries took part in 2012, we did not know it was its last year for a long period of time. With regard to the interest of individual dancers, we tried an innovated version of the summer dance school in 2014 – two young dancers, Slovaks – natives of Banská Bystrica currently living in Ireland expressed their interest in learning Slovak folk dances. We thus organised a preliminary year of our home Summer School of folk dance which is also prepared for 2015 in its extended form. Those of our compatriots who are coming to see their relatives in Banská Bystrica and its surroundings, can enrol in the Summer School of folk dance prepared in the term from 10th – 14th August 2015. The participants will be dealt with respect to individual abilities, but the school is primarily for beginners – regardless their age. The participants will be provided with the basics of dance, and in case of interest, they can attend creative workshops in folk crafts and lectures on traditional culture. The summer school of folk dance will be organized in the form of day camps. More information: zuzana.drugova@umb.sk.
